I had a weekend in Stratford upon Avon on 9th February 2018 and although the weather wasn’t particularly great, I did manage to get some photos which I hope to use later and some interesting portraits of Shakespeare.

I particularly liked ‘Shakespeare State Two’ (1996) by Steve Kaufman, aka SAK (1960 – 2010) on display at Shakespeare’s Birthplace.  Steve Alan Kaufman became an assistant to Andy Warhol as a teenager at The Factory in New York.

Title page of the First Folio, the first published edition (1623) of the collected works of William Shakespeare; it was originally titled Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories & Tragedies.

The above painting is oil on canvas silkscreen and was based on an engraving by Martin Droeshout (left) published in ‘First Folio’ in 1623.

I was intrigued by this portrait by Australian artist Ted May entitled ‘Young Shakespeare Contemplating’ 2004, I like the sketchy feel of it.  Although it’s not particularly detailed and looks a little unfinished, it’s clear to see that it’s of William Shakespeare.
